Erectile dysfunction causes: Five reasons why you could be struggling in bed
Millions of men across the UK will suffer from erectile dysfunction at some point in their lives.
The condition, known as impotence, is the inability to get or keep an erection firm enough to have sex.
It does increase with age, as 22% of men over the age of 60 and 30% of men over the age of 70 suffer from the penis problem.
But it’s not always going to be a part of old age, instead the cause is most likely due to physical or psychological conditions.
Here are the erectile dysfunction causes and five reasons why you could be struggling in bed.
Prostate cancer risk could be lowered by eating mushrooms, according to study
1. Medical conditions
Certain conditions, like heart disease, could often be the culprit when it comes to erectile dysfunction.
ED symptoms may occur earlier than those of heart disease due to cardiovascular issues like atherosclerosis.
This is when blood vessels become clogged up with fatty substances called plaques or atheroma, which causes impotence.
Other medical conditions that could put men at risk of ED are diabetes, chronic kidney disease and multiple sclerosis.
2. Emotional distress
Problems within a relationship can often be the issue as stress could lead to struggling in the bedroom.
Depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, guilt and fear of sexual failure are all contributing factors.
Certain medications may make it difficult for you to maintain your erection, like antidepressants or blood pressure medications.
While these drugs may treat a condition, they all increase the risk factor of erectile dysfunction.

4. Lifestyle choices
Smoking, binge drinking or drugs are more likely going to increase the chances of the penis problem.
However, eating foods in flavonoids, like blueberries, could reduce the risk of ED.
5. Physical injury
Exercise is great for the health but any type of injury in the lower half of your body could cause erection dysfunction.

The research from men’s digital health Numan found that 47% of men in the capital have not sought professional help for the issue.
Sokratis Papafloratos, Numan CEO and Founder, said: “No matter how embarrassing you think your condition is, there’s likely to be at least one person nearby who’s gone or is going through the same thing.
“We want men to know that they are not alone in facing ED, so there is no reason for the stigma and taboo associated with the issue. Not only that, but taking action and doing something about the problem has never been simpler.”
